QUT Kelvin Grove Community Gardens

The aim of the design brief was to establish a secure sustainable future for a community-minded village campus at Kelvin Grove QUT by 2050. The key strategy is to create inclusivity and interconnected communities on campus between all stakeholders using a holistic approach. As a group, we focussed on six key sustainable development goals that target these complex sustainability problems underneath our overall strategy of creating an inclusive and community-feel village campus. My individual design concept of an on campus community garden, was developed through the examination of SDG 12: Sustainable consumption and production patterns within QUT Kelvin Grove. It was apparent that within the campus there are a variety of unsustainable consumption and production patters in place, which inevitably contribute to large negative impacts on the environment. The overall goal of the community garden is to completely shift unsustainable consumption and production patterns by 2050, through the involvement and education within a thriving and connected network community gardens conceived of, cultivated by and supported by the Village Campus Community. The community garden will be a space that promotes sustainable procurement practices and will ensure all community members have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature. By working with members within the community to build and maintain the gardens, the need to reinforce their ties to the environment and increase food access, security and education will be prioritised. The gardens will optimise resource use, minimise negative environmental impact and social impacts of consumption/ production patterns to stimulate and facilitate trends towards more sustainable patterns. Addressing the prevailing environmental and sustainability challenges within the campus, the community gardens provide a space that facilitates necessary changes to achieve sustainable lifestyles.
